The Scottish city of Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland having a population of over 190,000 people living there. Aberdeen is the 37th largest city in the United Kingdom and has many different names for it which include; Granite City, The Grey City and The Silver City with the Golden Sands. Aberdeen is also known as the Oil Capital of Europe as the discovery of the North Sea Oil was found there during the 1970’s.

The first evidence of Aberdeen’s settlement was founded over 8000 years ago as prehistoric villages were built by the rivers Dee and Don. The city began as two separate settlements which were called old Aberdeen and new Aberdeen. New Aberdeen was a trading and fishing settlement at the time. During the 1300’s Aberdeen was transformed into a financially independent community where the town’s main source of income was from the city’s food production. Throughout the times of Scottish independence, Aberdeen was under English rule until Robert the Bruce invaded Aberdeen castle in 1308 and retook the Scottish town. Aberdeen was then burnt down in 1336 by Edward III and then was rebuilt to be called New Aberdeen. Throughout the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in the 1600’s, Aberdeen was assaulted by both sides as the city was taken and then robbed by Royalist troops. Throughout the 19th Century, huge infrastructure links that were built in and out of Aberdeen led it to becoming bankrupt. Later on, the city had a major increase of income as the shipping and fishing industries developed into a harbour.

The Robert Gordon University and University of Aberdeen are the main Universities which are located within the Scottish city. The University of Aberdeen was originally King’s College which was founded in 1495 but then it was redeveloped to become a University. The university is the fifth oldest in the English speaking world as is consistently ranked in the top 200 universities in the world. The public research university has over 13,000 students which includes many international students learning course such as cultural history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and biological sciences to name a few.  The Robert Gordon University (also known as RGU) gained university status in 1992 and was voted as the best modern university in the United Kingdom by the Times Good University Guide in 2013. The Scottish university also has a huge employment rate of 97.2%.

Aberdeen is also very famous for its football club which is called Aberdeen FC. The football club have won the Scottish Premier League four times and the Scottish cup seven times.
