The Welsh city of Swansea is located in the coast of South West Wales. Swansea is the second largest city in Wales and the twenty-fifth largest in the United Kingdom having a population of over 400,000 people. Throughout the 19th Century, Swansea has been well known for its input to the copper industry earning its nick name of ‘Copperopolis’.
The first settlement of Swansea comes back to the Viking era as it was developed as a trading post. The name of the city was originally from Sveinn’s Island which refers from the bank at the mouth of the River Tawe. Other historians suggest that the city was founded by the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard which is pronounced as Swans-y instead of Swan-sea.
The port of Swansea was popular with trading products such as wine, hides, wool and cloth. Throughout the Industrial Revolution, these combinations including coal had strong trade routes with Cornwall, Devon and the West Country. During the 1800’s, Swansea became the front runners at recovering valuable ores which included gold and silver which increased the town’s economy dramatically therefore increasing the population dramatically by 500%.
During the 20th Century, the industry in Swansea declined leaving the lower end of the town filled with waste products. As a result, the docks were Swansea’s main source of income to the city’s economy.
Swansea has a very popular football club which is called Swansea City AFC. The club was founded in 1912 and then moved to the Liberty Stadium during the 2005/2006 season. Swansea is also home to the Swansea Rugby Football Club which is a founding member of the Welsh Rugby Union. During the 2003 season, Swansea RFC merged with Neath RFC to form the ever so popular rugby team, the Ospreys. The Ospreys are the most successful team in history of the Pro12 tournament winning the completion four times. The famous Welsh rugby club were also the first team to beat a major touring side as they won against Australia 24-16 in 2006.
The Swansea University has one campus which overlooks Swansea Bay. The University has been hugely recognised for its engineering department and its fundamental work on computing techniques for solving engineering design problems. The Welsh university was awarded the UK’s “best student experience” in 2005 and the new bay campus was opened 10 years later. Swansea also has 77 primary schools and 15 secondary schools in which 2 of them are colleges.
Swansea is currently going through a £1 billion regeneration programme which involves a large area of the city having a huge shopping centre, a Tesco superstore and a retail area which would be four times the size of the quadrant centre. The city is also going to be transformed visually with street art and new walkways along with green spaces that join with the two main squares.
