About Chatham
Chatham is the town situated on the River Medway in the North-Kent. River midway resided in South East England. It forms a large urban area known as the Medway Towns along with its neighbouring towns of Rochester and Gillingham. The population of Chatham was 76,792 approximately according to the census of 2011. This city is the birthplace of several ships. In 1984, Chatham Dockyard was terminated except aquatic buildings continue the concentrate for the growing tourist industry. Following cessation, the part of a site built as the commercial port and other parts were reconstructed for the utilisation of residential and business. Some parts formed as the Chatham Historic Dockyard museum. This city has the connections to the army. The number of militaries barracks were located in Chatham. The barracks of Brompton was found in the borough and continue the office of the Corps of Royal Engineers. This ward has the links for the road as well as the central variations for the region railway and bus stations. It consists of the shopping centre with several brands for shopping.
Governance
Under the Local Government Act 1972, the city lost their freedom. Then it became a part of the Borough of Medway on 1 April 1974. It is the non-metropolitan region of County Kent. The name of borough faced many variations. During 1979, borough renamed Borough of Rochester-upon-Medway and the City of Rochester-upon-Medway changed from 1982. The Medway area is known as unitary authority area in 1998 and is administratively separated from County of Kent. For ceremonial purposes, this town continues to remain a member of the county of Kent. It is under the control of the parliamentary constituency of Chatham and Aylesford.
Geography
Chatham is located at the intersection point of North down's dip Slope and River Medway. It provides the town with a significant benefits of river usage. As compared to opposing bank, the river is broad and fast-flowing. Behind the Dockyard, there was swampy land that is identified as the St Mary’s Island with the many modern changes of house estates. Under the 20th century, the southern part of the district was solely rural owning some tracts of woodland and farms.
Landmarks
In 1900, the Grade II listed building in Chatham was established. It has the novel architecture and also stands in Brook. This town took the significant role as an arts centre by being part of the Medway conurbation. It became the prosperous Brook Theatre since 1996. During 2011, the old bus station was closed and Pentagon Centre endured in the city centre. The new bus station opened in the October 2011 was named as Chatham Waterfront bus station. The Chatham Waterfront bus station has the walking distance from the high street of town. This bus station replaced the Pentagon bus station that was constructed in the year 1970.
Transport
Besides Chatham Dockyard, The Medway's played a vital role in communication. It provided the transportation of goods to and from the centre of Kent. Cargoes include the timber, iron and stone from the Weald for designing and construction of ships. One of the longest rivers in Chatham was Sun Pier. Nowadays, barges are used for only tourist traffic. Besides the Marina, many yachts available on the rivers. Chatham began the road construction in the Roman period. It has the M2 motorway which was built to turn through traffic south of the Medway Towns. Chatham is identified as the hub of Medway Towns. It is the primary reason for the high traffic in the town. So, the government have issued some plans in the past to solve the problem of enormous traffic.
